2021 Toyota Tundra lutar sig hårt mot sitt varumärke och sitt rykte om hållbarhet.

2021 års Toyota Tundra jobbar hårt för att dra sitt strå till stacken i fullstorleks pickupklassen, men trots en muskulös V-8-motor hamnar den bakom Ram 1500 och Ford F-150 i vår ranking. Den är lätt på lyx, lägre på bogsering och dragning, och även i bensinkörning.

Vi skulle fortfarande köpa en om vi sätter hållbarhet och andrahandsvärde i toppen av rankingen, men ingen gör fullstora lastbilar bättre än Detroit.

För 2021 inkluderar de få ändringarna av Tundran nya Nightshade och Trail Special Editions, som mestadels är visuella förändringar. De stora versionerna – SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, Platinum och 1794 Edition-trimningar – bärs över med samma grundläggande former som den har burits sedan vi hade en tillträdande president Obama. Det är tafatt (låt oss få det ordet att hända) och lökformigt, och inuti ser Tundra SR lite för sparsam ut.

Toyota lägger sina ansträngningar istället på sin stökiga 5,7-liters V-8 med 381 hästkrafter, som släpper ut mjuk, Lexus-acceleration som flygblad på Times Square. Dess 6-växlade automat har rätt växlar för måttliga hastigheter, men den behöver åtminstone ett par fler växlar för att klara sig bättre än dess mycket låga 15 mpg EPA kombinerade topp. Tundran kan dra upp till 10 200 pund och kan fästa på 1 730 pund vikt i sin säng; den har dock fastnat med ett deltidsfyrhjulsdrivet system, och dess TRD Pro terrängmodell är bra men det är ingen Raptor eller TRX.

Tundran ska göras om.

Toyota skrev dagens Tundra i mitten av 2000-talet, släppte den för 2008 års modell och har inte gjort mycket med den sedan dess. Vi tar en poäng var för den åldrade interiören och exteriören, och ger den en 3 för stil.

Vi skulle lyssna på Tundras NASCAR-stil V-8 hela dagen.

Toyota trycker på en häftig V-8-motor för att driva Tundran, och även om den sannolikt inte delar en enda bult med sina NASCAR-motorer, låter den verkligen som en. Bakom dess smöriga kraftleverans, dess rebelliska morrande och dess slickväxande 6-växlade automat, är det den stora anledningen till att Tundra får en 6:a för prestanda - en poäng för drivlinan och en för dragkapacitet, minus en för dess lastbilshantering.

De 381 hk 5,7-liters V-8-soldaterna på i Tundran, som förlorade sin mindre 4,6-liters V-8-motor förra året. Toyota skickar V-8:ans kraft till antingen bakhjulen eller alla fyra hjulen genom en 6-växlad automat, som förlorar i kuggräkning till Fords 10-växlade och GM:s 10-växlade. Komfort & kvalitet

Det är lika stort som ett stadskvarter inuti (nåja, nästan), men Tundras lagerinteriör är ganska mörk.

Tundran har tillräckligt med utrymme mellan sina dörrar för att lätt kunna passa fem eller till och med sex personer, och framsätespassagerare blir mycket bra behandlade – liksom virket på baksidan. Men baksätet behöver slappna av, och interiören behöver en omarbetning. Det är en 7:a för komfort och användbarhet.

Toyota säljer Tundran i versioner med utökad och besättningshytt. Alla har en frambänk med nedfällbart armstöd som standard, men vi skulle spendera pengar för de elektriska framsätena, som får kaptensstolsdämpning, värme, kylning och läder på de dyraste modellerna.

På baksidan är det mindre komfort än i konkurrerande fullstora lastbilar. Benutrymmet är blyg i Tundras med utökad hytt; Besättningshytter har utmärkt benutrymme och breda dörrar, men baksätets ryggstöd står upprätt vid uppmärksamhet och skulle inte vara vår utvalda plats för en lång resa.

IIHS har något att säga om Tundran; det är inte bra.

Toyotas Tundra är en av de sällsynta pickupbilarna som kommer med standard automatisk nödbromsning - men dess krocktestresultat skulle fortfarande ge oss paus.
